Metrology Apprenticeships - under 18 & 18+
We’ll help you find your feet and then GROW and GROW...
You will join the team that has developed all of Gillette’s new products over the last 60 years and will have the chance to impact the Gillette, Venus and Art of Shaving Brands that are used by hundreds of millions of men and women all over the world.
Our Research & Development facility contains one of the strongest P&G/Gillette engineering capabilities within Europe and is the main R&D facility for Gillette in the world. Our apprenticeship is for Metrology, which is the Science of Measurement. You will be learning the skills of Metrology and how we apply it. You will be 100% supervised by a Metrology Technician & will build up a portfolio of inspection job write ups, including method development.
As you progress you will move on to greater application of Metrology techniques, and how to apply them in our daily work. There is still 100% supervision at the beginning, but the jobs are now ‘live’ (for active projects) with an opportunity to really impact our research. This is where you build up not only your Metrology capability, but also interpersonal skills, time management, accuracy, quality, confidence, and pace.
Accurate measurements are vital to our capability. Most of the measurements we use go down to microns. I.E. 20 microns is 1/5 width of a human hair. The Fusion razor has 56 individual measurement points & all must be within 20 microns tolerance, or you will get a bad shave. Once we are happy with your skill & confidence level, we will gradually let you go solo on live jobs, but always with the safety net of a mentor.
A wide mix of training is provided for the duration of the apprenticeship, combining the daily tasks in the group where the apprentice is based, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment. 30 days per year(6 block weeks of 5 days) of training at NPL (National Physical Laboratory in Teddington) will form the core of the off-the-job training. Further training will then be built into your workplace activities. All corporate, equipment & legislative training will be provided by us.
Our aim is to help you be confident in the workplace from day one; through additional training you will learn how to communicate effectively, how to manage your time, and how to work as part of a team. We want you to develop your self-awareness and your confidence.
To take advantage of this opportunity you will have gained, or be expecting to gain, 5 GCSEs grade 4+ and at least a 5/6 grade in Maths & 4/5 in English Language. But just as important are genuine enthusiasm, determination to succeed, a high degree of passion and commitment to developing an engineering career.
P&G promote diversity in employment, and welcome applications from both men and women, regardless of disability, sexual orientation, racial/ethnic origin or age. Successful candidates will be selected solely on their ability to carry out the duties of the post.
