Following a recent acquisition at the end of 2020 and a new name announced this month, BSW Timber Solutions Ltd (previously SCA Wood) are going through some very exciting changes.  Now part of the BSW Group, which has six main operating divisions, we are part of the largest sawmilling business in the UK, with a turnover of c. £370 million and a capacity to produce over 1.2 million cubic metres of sawn timber per year.

BSW Timber Solutions Ltd. is one the largest processors and distributors of timber products in the UK with annual sales in excess of £145 million. The business operates from its headquarters and distribution centre in Stoke-on-Trent, and has further processing and distribution capability at its three other sites in Melton, Welshpool and Cumbernauld.

At our site in Melton, Hull, we have ambitious plans to grow and develop the site to a centre of manufacturing excellence.  Led by a very experienced General Manager, the last 12 months have seen a change to our distribution model, investment of £500,000 in racking and a change to working patterns (24/7) to increase our capacity by 30%.  With nine production lines, over 20 HGV’s delivering daily to our customers, a busy e-Commerce operation and new customers on the horizon, we are now looking for an excellent Head of Manufacturing to lead all production activities.

Reporting to the General Manager and part of the senior leadership team on site, you will have two highly competent Production Managers and you will all be responsible for ensuring the site produces high quality timber products in line with OTIF measures.  With nearly 150 employees, it will be down to the three of you to inspire, motivate and bring our bold vision to life.

This role takes full accountability for future proofing the existing set up.  Utilising your project and CAPEX management skills, you will drive continuous development and the improvement of OEE.   We need someone who has the ability to see the wood through the trees (excuse the pun) and take a strategic perspective within the timber industry, wider business and our Company.   Our industry is niche and whilst it would be brilliant to have experience from within it, we would be very keen to hear from people who have worked in others industries such as kitchens, caravans and building materials.

One thing about our business is that we focus on behaviours and the behaviours of our leaders is paramount to success.  We are looking for an authentic, inspiring leader with a genuine passion to really make a difference within the operational activities and with our people.   Since the site opened in 2013, our leaders have cultivated a caring and kind environment to work within and we need this leader to fit into this way of working and help us grow our culture even further.  We have some extremely talented people who we want to empower and develop, so your natural coaching skills will be essential.

It goes without saying, we require a highly professional and methodical person with a personality that is not afraid to challenge the way we do things.  In fact, it is very important that you have stacks of courage to make decisions that may be against the grain.

As well as an amazing role, consultative working environment and opportunity to work with some of the best leaders in our industry, we are offering:

  • Salary between £50,000 and £58,000 depending on experience.
  • Generous bonus potential
  • 33 days holiday (inc. bank holidays)
  • Life assurance
  • Generous pension contributions of up to 10% of your salary
  • Exclusive access to a discount and cashback scheme giving you the opportunity to save money from hundreds of retailers and services throughout the UK

We pride ourselves on being a family friendly organisation and appreciate that working and having a family comes in hand in hand, as such we welcome flexible working and are open to discussing requirements during the recruitment process.

Our site operates 24/7 and whilst this role will be responsible for the operations, normal office hours are 8am-5pm Monday to Friday (however flexibility works both ways in our eyes).
